International Jazz Day

Bolzano

On April 30th, the Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige and the municipality of Bolzano will take part in the Unesco International Jazz Day events with a marching band walking through Bolzano’s city center.

The Municipality of Bolzano in collaboration with the Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige will host the Italian marching band “Funk Off” on April 30th – Unesco’s International Jazz Day – to swing and groove through Bolzano.

The musical stroll through the city center on this “holiday” of improvised music will start at 5 p.m. at Rathausplatz and will continue through Lauben, Museumstraße, Universitätsplatz, Mustergasse to Waltherplatz.

The itinerant street concert is in line with the city’s cultural orientation: in 2023, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared Bolzano a “City of Music” and included it in the “UNESCO Creative Cities” network.

Jazz is not just music, it’s a way of living, a way of being, a way of thinking,” said the legendary jazz singer Nina Simone. The long history of jazz is closely linked to the fight against discrimination and racism, and to a commitment to equal, democratic and, above all, peaceful dialogue. For this reason, in November 2011, UNESCO proclaimed the 30th of April as the “International Day of Jazz”, which has since been celebrated worldwide by musicians and organizers with concerts and projects.
