Chennai

Traditional Nagaswaram (South Indian wind instrument) performance

Chennai City of Music, under the leadership of Greater Chennai Corporation headed by the Commissioner (Mr. G. Prakash) , Joint Commissioner – Revenue and Finance (Ms. R. Lalitha) , Revenue Officer (Mr. Sukumar Chittibabu), and Superintendent Engineer – Parks (Mr. Vijayakumar) have brought together a core commitee featuring representatives of Kalakshetra Foundation, The Music Academy, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (Chennai), Sruti Magazine, and Aanmajothi.

In our Civic Initiative 2019, we present ‘Concerts at the Park’. Through this initiative, we aim to bring performances to public spaces, and its audiences. We plan to present to them an experience of the 7 creative fields (Crafts and Folk art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts, and Music), not just in their own, individual forms, but also in fusing, juxtaposing and combining within and across forms/styles.

Our goal for the upcoming year is to present 30 events with a 100 artists to 10,000 Chennaiites.

The inaugural event of this initiative was held on July 20th, 2019, and showcased a unique combination of the beautiful Nagaswaram (South Indian wind instrument) with a traditional South Indian dance presentation. Our upcoming events include performances of the traditional Villu Pattu (Interactive narrative music) , and the dynamic Kattaikkuttu (Language (Tamil) – based theatre).
